My First Impressions of Playing POE2 on PS5
What Kind of Game is POE2?
Path Of Exile 2 (POE2) is an action RPG developed by Grinding Gear Games, anticipated for its in-depth content and new systems built upon its predecessor. Currently in early access, it can be experienced by purchasing access for around $30. With plans to be free-to-play upon official release, it's drawing significant attention from many players.
This game supports various platforms, including PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. I started playing on PS5, and the fact that it's enjoyable on console is a major plus. Especially with the PS5's remote play feature, I can connect and continue playing on my mobile devices from anywhere, which I found great.
First Impressions and Character Selection
Upon starting the game, I watched the cinematic video, and I was a bit disappointed that there were no Korean subtitles. Thankfully, the in-game menus are well-localized in Korean, so there were no issues progressing. The scene where the characters escape from the gallows during character selection was quite interesting. I chose the Monk, and the fast attack speed and satisfying hits made it very immersive from the beginning.
The graphics were honestly a bit underwhelming considering the PS5's capabilities, but the UI layout, similar to the Diablo series, made it easy to adapt. With familiar elements like the HP/MP bars, potion slots, and portals, anyone who has played Diablo will find it easy to enjoy.
Features of the Monk Class
The Monk is a melee combat character characterized by fast attacks and agile movements. The playstyle of using powerful combo skills and attributes to subdue enemies is appealing. The satisfying hit feedback from the start made combat fun, and the intuitive skill usage made it easy to get the hang of.
Controls and Remote Play
The PS5 DualSense controller utilizes almost all of its buttons, making the controls feel somewhat complex. POE2 isn't just about rushing in and using potions; it requires Soulslike-style controls like rolling to evade and precise attacks. Because of this, I'm a little worried about how smooth it will be when playing remotely.
However, the PS5's remote play feature is a significant advantage, allowing you to connect and continue playing on your mobile device from anywhere. I think it's the perfect environment for enjoying the game in your spare time during the weekends.
Early Access and Future Expectations
Currently in early access, POE2 will undergo beta testing until June of next year before transitioning to a free-to-play game. While starting for free will be great, experiencing it in early access is also worthwhile, in my opinion. Exploring new builds and skill systems is very enjoyable, so I highly recommend it to fans of the hack-and-slash genre.
Concluding Thoughts...
POE2 is a game that adds unique elements while being similar to the Diablo series. The controls on the PS5 are somewhat complex, but thanks to the Monk class's satisfying hits and flashy action, I lost track of time while playing. If you're interested, try experiencing it through early access! Cross-play is available with other platforms, so it will be even more fun with friends.
