How Much Do We Have to Give Up on Enjoying Music in Korean Apartments?

How to Enjoy Music in a Korean Apartment

From a Detached House to an Apartment: A Change in Environment

Hello everyone! If you've moved from a detached house to an apartment like I did, you're probably wondering how the music listening environment will change. In my detached house, I could play my Bose 301 speakers at a high volume without any issues. But apartments are different. Noise between floors is a sensitive issue, and I was worried my music listening might bother my neighbors.

Especially in apartments, sound travels easily not only up and down but also to the sides. Even if the volume isn't that loud, low-frequency sounds and vibrations can lead to complaints. So, how can you enjoy music in an apartment without causing conflict with your neighbors? Let me share some tips I've found.

Volume Control and Appropriate Times

The most important thing in an apartment is volume control. Generally, slightly louder volumes are acceptable during the daytime (9 AM to 8 PM), but it's best to reduce the sound as much as possible after the evening. According to smartphone decibel meter apps, an average of 50-60 dB is appropriate. This is similar to the level of conversation and shouldn't cause significant inconvenience to neighbors.

Another important point is the timing of music listening. Sounds travel more easily late at night or early in the morning, so it's best to avoid these times. You could run into trouble if the building management or the inter-floor noise committee receives complaints. Initially, I only listened to music during the day, but as I got to know my neighbors, I could gradually adjust more freely.

Soundproofing and Vibration Isolation Tips

Soundproofing and vibration isolation are essential for enjoying music in an apartment. Placing anti-vibration pads or marble slabs under speakers can reduce low-frequency vibrations from traveling to the floor below. Additionally, installing carpets or thick curtains in the room can reduce sound reflection and improve soundproofing.

If your budget allows, you might consider soundproofing the entire room. While professional soundproofing costs money, it creates an environment where you can enjoy music without worry. In my case, simple anti-vibration pads and a carpet were effective enough.

Utilizing Headphones and Communicating with Neighbors

If controlling the volume is difficult, using headphones or earphones is a good option. Nowadays, there are many high-quality wireless headphones available that offer sound quality comparable to speakers. Especially at night, using headphones is almost essential.

And most importantly, communication with your neighbors is crucial. When you move in, saying something like, "Please let me know if you hear any music," can make things much smoother. I was very worried at first, but when I spoke honestly with my neighbors, they were understanding.

In Conclusion...

Enjoying music in an apartment isn't as free as in a detached house, but it's definitely possible if you use a few helpful tips. With good volume control, soundproofing measures, and communication with your neighbors, you can continue enjoying your music life without stress. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful music listening life in your new environment!
