A Snack to Eat at Gwanghwamun Plaza? Order Takeout from Popeyes Gwanghwamun

A Visit to Popeyes Gwanghwamun: The Allure of Cajun Flavors and Chicken Sandwiches

The Newly Opened Popeyes Gwanghwamun Branch

On July 25, 2023, Popeyes opened its doors near Gwanghwamun Station. Creating a buzz by providing a new option to the fast-food scene around Gwanghwamun Plaza, which was previously dominated by KFC, it brought back memories of when Popeyes was incredibly popular in Korea. I visited, filled with nostalgia, and had a more satisfying experience than expected.

Difference Between a Chicken Sandwich and a Hamburger?

One of the most interesting things about this visit was Popeyes' signature menu item, the Original Chicken Sandwich . It was interesting that while this is referred to as a “chicken sandwich” abroad, in Korea it’s called a “hamburger.” This seems to stem from a cultural difference. In the US, the word "hamburger" is mainly used when beef patties are included, whereas if it includes a chicken patty, it's classified as a chicken sandwich. In contrast, in Korea, there is a tendency to refer to anything with meat between buns as a “hamburger.” These linguistic differences added another layer of fun to understanding food culture.

The thick and juicy chicken thigh patty blended perfectly with the brioche bun, making it truly delicious. The harmony between the crispy breading and the soft, tender inside was amazing from the first bite. It more than lived up to its reputation as a dish fiercely contested in the so-called "chicken sandwich wars."

Cajun Flavors and Popeyes Nostalgia

I've been familiar with Popeyes since the time it was hugely popular in Korea. Cajun fries , in particular, were a beloved menu item back then; thanks to the unique spicy seasoning and crispy texture, it’s a flavor I still can’t forget. I ordered Cajun fries this time as well, and the taste remained the same. The savory and delicious seasoning was so good that I couldn’t stop eating.

Actually, during the time Popeyes had disappeared from Korea, I felt a craving for Cajun-style food. That’s why the news of the Gwanghwamun branch opening must have been welcomed not just by me but also by many people. Thanks to the return of Popeyes, I was very happy to enjoy the taste of Cajun once again, along with the memories of those times.

Restaurant Environment and Details

Thanks to the spacious and comfortable seating area, the restaurant could be comfortably used by groups and people dining alone. The interior design, using a combination of orange and mint colors, created a clean and sophisticated feel. Phrases like "Cooked Slow, Served Fast," which well represent the brand's philosophy, were displayed on the walls.

Also, the beer vending machine inside the store was another interesting element. Needless to say, chicken and beer are a great match, right? It was a perfect environment to enjoy a simple drink. The Dyson Airblade Tap hand dryer , which I found in the restroom after my meal, was also impressive. I thought that this product, which allows you to turn on the water and dry your hands immediately, is hygienic and convenient.

In Conclusion...

Popeyes Gwanghwamun was more than just a place to grab fast food; it was a place where you could experience the brand's philosophy and unique taste. The taste of the Original Chicken Sandwich and Cajun fries exceeded expectations, and special elements like the beer vending machine added more fun to the visit.

Especially if you are used to Cajun-style food, it would be a great place to visit. If you are considering fast food near Gwanghwamun, I would strongly recommend Popeyes Gwanghwamun , a rising new option!
