MacBook Air Starlight vs. Midnight, Which color do you prefer?

MacBook Air, Midnight vs. Starlight: Which Color Should You Choose?

Confused About the New Colors of the MacBook Air?

When you're trying to buy a MacBook Air with an M2 chip or later, one of the most concerning decisions is the color choice. Silver and Space Gray have long been the representative colors of Apple products. Especially Space Gray, a dark color that has been steadily loved since it first appeared on the 2015 12-inch MacBook model. However, this form factor added two new colors, Midnight and Starlight, expanding the range of options.

It's hard to see the color difference well online, and if you go to an Apple Store, you often end up focusing more on the Pro models, and the colors of the Airs become hard to remember. So, after much deliberation, I purchased MacBook Airs with the same specifications in both Midnight and Starlight colors from Karrot Market(Second hand market in Korea) and used them myself. Now, I'd like to share my honest review of the two colors.

Midnight: A Black Color with a Hint of Blue

At first, I thought Midnight would be black, but when I saw it in person, it was a unique color with a deep blue tint. On the official Apple website, the HEX color code for Midnight is listed as #1d1f24 , which shows that it's not a completely black color but a dark color mixed with a slight blue tone.

It may look black when viewed from a distance or in a dimly lit environment, but the blue tint is definitely visible under natural light. Personally, I found this attractive, but at the same time, I thought, "It could be confused with the Space Black of the Pro models." Especially when the lid is closed, seeing the blue tint again was a little disappointing.

However, the fact that scratches and fingerprints are not easily visible due to the dark tone was a major advantage. I was able to maintain a clean look even when using it outdoors.

Starlight: An Elegant Color with a Gold Tone Rather Than Silver

Starlight may sound like it's a silver or white color, but in reality, it's a unique color with a subtle gold tone. On the official Apple website, the HEX color code for Starlight is listed as #f8f1e7 , which is similar to the existing gold tone but with a lighter and softer feel.

Personally, I was expecting a color closer to silver, but I was a little surprised because the gold feel was stronger than I thought. In particular, because the top bezel is black, I felt that the cohesiveness with the display was somewhat lacking when it was opened. And because it's a light tone, scratches and smudges are more visible, which was also a drawback.

However, the elegant and sophisticated feel was definitely strong. Especially under indoor lighting, it was enough to create a luxurious atmosphere.

In Conclusion...

Both colors are attractive, but personally, I prefer darker colors, so I recommend Midnight. Especially if you use it a lot outdoors, the neat and sophisticated feel of Midnight will stand out more. On the other hand, Starlight would be suitable for those who like an elegant and soft atmosphere.
